Former Sheffield Wednesday star Carlton Palmer believes that Barry Bannan is far too good to play in League One.

The midfielder has remained at the club despite their relegation to the third tier of English football.

Wednesday finished rock-bottom of the Championship, as they were forced to battle a points deduction before the campaign had even begun.

Is Bannan the best player in League One?

Bannan extended his contract in February of 2021 and while Palmer believes that he is earning a decent wage at Hillsborough, he has been impressed with his commitment.

The midfielder, of course, has played for Aston Villa in the Premier League, making a total of 85 appearances in the top-flight, and has been a fixture in the Championship too, playing 291 times.

And Palmer insists that he is far too good for League One, with this season being his first at such a level, although he hopes he can help Wednesday enjoy a fine season.

Speaking to This Is Futbol, he said: “Barry Bannan has probably been Sheffield Wednesday’s most consistent player over the last three or four seasons, since he’s been at the football club. I think he’s a terrific footballer, I like his attitude towards the game. He made it clear that he didn’t want to leave Sheffield Wednesday, his family was settled in Sheffield.

“He signed a new contract and he’s on big money; I think Barry’s a top Championship player. He was just short for me when he came to Sheffield Wednesday from Aston Villa, he was short from the Premier League, if you like, not a million miles short but he was short. In the Championship and certainly in this league, he’s far too good for this.”
