Carlton Palmer has hailed Sheffield Wednesday after tying central defender Dominic Iorfa down to a new contract.

Iorfa has penned a new two-year deal which will keep him at Hillsborough until the summer of 2023 and has already set his sights on winning promotion to the Championship.

Since joining the Owls from Wolverhampton Wanderers in January 2019, the 26-year-old has gone on to make 75 appearances for the club and played every minute of their League One campaign so far this season.

Iorfa was unable to stop Wednesday suffering relegation from the Championship last term but has played a critical role in the Yorkshire club getting the new season off to a positive start, keeping four clean sheets along the way.

While the deadline day signing of former West Bromwich Albion striker Saido Berahino will boost the Owls in the attacking third, Palmer believes towering defender Iorfa could play a key role in Wednesday bouncing back from last term’s disappointment.

The former Owls midfielder exclusively told TIF: “Iorfa’s contract signing is brilliant news for them. This guy is a good Championship level player.

“He’s had his fair share of injuries which have set him back but I think it’s great they have secured him on a long-term basis because, fingers crossed, they get promotion and he’s comfortable in the league above as well.

“It’s good business by Wednesday and that’s what they’ve got to be doing with these young players. We can’t be losing them to other clubs.”
