Former Newcastle United defender Steve Howey has told This Is Futbol that he does not know where the goals are going to come from for his old side if Callum Wilson picks up an injury, amid a scare against Southampton last weekend when he was taken off after picking up a knock.

Wilson was Newcastle’s top scorer in the Premier League last season, finding the back of the net on 12 occasions, and has carried that form into this campaign after registering twice in three games.

Indeed, the 2020/21 campaign was a bright one for Wilson. However, just like during his time at Bournemouth, the 29-year-old striker had trouble with injuries.

Can Newcastle survive without Wilson?

And if that becomes a regular occurrence at St James’ Park this term, Howey believes his former team could be in trouble.

“You’ve got [Joe] Willock, who’s going to score a few goals,” the ex-Newcastle player said to TIF.

“[Allan] Saint-Maximin might chip in now and again, but ultimately, the worrying thing for me is Wilson. If he gets injured, then where are your goals going to come from?”

It is definitely a valid point to raise. Last season, Joelinton scored just four goals in 31 Premier League appearances.

There is not really sufficient cover for Wilson if he does pick up a serious injury, something some Newcastle fans probably would have liked Steve Bruce to address in the summer transfer window.
