Many Sunderland fans have vented their frustrations online after the club announced they would be playing Wigan Athletic in the next round of the Carabao Cup.

Having squeezed past Blackpool 3-2 in the second round of the competition, the Black Cats were then drawn against fellow League One club Wigan for the next stage.

Having already played against the Latics this August and on two other occasions since December 2020, it seems as if the Sunderland supporters were hoping for a slightly more interesting cup tie.

Indeed, when the club’s official Twitter account shared the news, it was not met with the greatest regard.

Here’s what these Sunderland fans had to say…

“Boring!!”

“Sunderland get drawn in the Wyke family derby. Utterly draining.”
“Boring draw all round really.”
“Worst draw imaginable.”
“Of course it had to be Wigan.”
“Anyone fancy it? Was hoping for a big team…”

As unenthused as some of these Sunderland supporters may be, there will at least be a potential narrative between the two teams to possibly pique their interest.

Indeed, after scoring 31 times for the Black Cats last season, Charlie Wyke joined Wigan in the summer – so both sets of supporters will likely have a keen focus on his performance throughout the match which takes place next month.
