Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on Manchester United and their plans for the rest of the transfer window.

This summer hasn’t been the busiest for Manchester United in terms of incomings and outgoings, although they have spent big to bring in the likes of Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane as they look to put up a decent challenge for honours this season.

Will Man Utd sign anyone else before the window closes?

Yes

No

But with just a week to go until the end of the transfer window, it appears as though their focus has changed from bringing players in to getting players out.

At least, that was according to Romano, who was speaking to The United Stand, as he claimed that Manchester United could still bring someone in this window, but it would all depend on who they can get rid of first:

“From what I’m told, [Ole Gunnar] Solskjaer is being honest when he said it depends about the outgoings and then we will decide, so this is the truth. So they are still waiting to see what happens with [Jesse] Lingard and with many other players that they have to decide if [they are] selling, loaning out, or not, and then they will decide on new signings.

“So I would say there is a chance [of incomings], yes. It’s 100% sure? No, not yet. So we need to wait day by day and see what happens, but it’s a possibility. It’s one of the possibilities and they will be ready if they find the right opportunity, so let’s see day by day.”

Merseyside derby, Liverpool and Everton

Who scored the opening goal in Liverpool's 4-3 win over Leeds United at Anfield in September?

So it may very well be a case of trying to substitute quantity for quality.

Manchester United certainly do have a big squad on their hands and it does look bloated in some areas like in central midfield and on the wings, and whilst they do need a big squad to compete on four fronts this season, it is verging on the side of being just a little bit too big, with some players very much surplus to requirements.

It was reported earlier in the summer that the club wanted to trim a lot of players from the team, but with the end of the window fast approaching, they may need to get desperate when it comes to getting them out the door, especially if they do have plans to bring in one more player, as Romano hints at.
