Former professional footballer Dean Windass believes that Patrick Vieira appointment wasn’t a panic and that he deserves a chance, amid a 3-0 defeat to Chelsea on the opening day of the Premier League.

Vieira was appointed Crystal Palace manager on a three-year-deal and will be his fourth managerial job, as the Frenchman has previously managed Manchester City’s Elite Development Squad, New York City and Nice.

Vieira had a phenomenal playing career winning both the World Cup and European Championship with national side France, as well as lifting the Champions League with Inter Milan and winning three Premier League titles whilst at Arsenal.

With his previous playing and managerial experience, Windass believes Vieira needs to be given a chance, telling This is Futbol: “Don’t think about panicking, listen you’ve got to give him a chance. He’s probably been, from my point of view, one of the best midfield players I played against and he knows the Premier League inside out.

“He’s had his affinity with English football for a number of years now, so he knows how to win games of football in the Premier League, he knows how to set up, he’s had two jobs before.”

Vieira has been active in the transfer market so far and appears to be favouring younger players for his new team. This is because he has signed Marc Guehi who is 21 from Chelsea and 19-year-old Michael Olise from Reading.

With a new manager and new emphasis on the Crystal Palace team, the Palace fans will be hoping that Vieira and the new signings can help improve on the 14th placed finish from last season in the Premier League.
