Former professional footballer Steve Howey believes that Aston Villa turned a corner last season, amid their opening-day defeat to Watford.

After being promoted from the Championship in the 2018/2019 season, Villa managed to stay in the Premier League by a single point in 2019/2020 before having a brilliant campaign last season where they finished eleventh.

Not only did Villa finish six places higher in the league than the previous season, they also accumulated 20 more points and there was a drastic improvement in their goal difference as they finished on +9 compared to -26 the season previous.

The improvement from Villa caught the attention of Howey who told This is Futbol: “I think Aston Villa of last season turned a corner, they’ve got some good signings in, some good players, played some decent stuff and they’ve had another little go this season as well.”

Aston Villa have looked to strengthen their squad this summer, as Dean Smith has bought Leon Bailey, Axel Tuanzebe, Ashley Young, Danny Ings and Emi Buendia into the football club.

This summer’s recruitment has seen Villa add plenty of creativity to their squad, as well as healthy competition throughout and if everyone can gel quickly, Villa could be on for another fantastic season in the Premier League.
