Journalist Dean Jones has recently spoken about West Ham United’s limitations in a potential move for Tammy Abraham.
Abraham’s future at Chelsea is in doubt and it has been reported that Aston Villa are interested in the Englishman, while West Ham have also drawn links with the striker in the past.
Jones appeared on the latest episode of Touchline Talk and spoke about West Ham’s interest in Abraham and whether they could look to sign him from Chelsea.
Should signing a striker be West Ham's priority?
Yes
No
The journalist stated that limitations around West Ham’s budget for a striker may not allow them to sign Abraham.
He claimed: “The only other club [apart from Villa] that really have shown concrete interest have been West Ham, but they can’t really stretch to £40 million, from what I’m told. I think their limit on a striker is about £30 million. Doesn’t seem like Chelsea are going to be willing to sell him for that.”
TIF Thoughts on West Ham’s need for a striker…
As things stand, Michail Antonio is West Ham’s only out-and-out striker, but the 31-year-old has had numerous injury problems over the last few campaigns. Even in the 2020/21 campaign, he had many fitness issues that kept him out of action.
So signing another striker should be a priority for the Hammers or they could be left to use other players in an unnatural position next season. Abraham has a reliable goals-per-90 tally over the last few seasons and he could certainly be a decent target for the club.
However, judging by what Jones had to say, it seems that the combination of the competition West Ham will face for Abraham’s signature and their own finances will see the striker steer clear of east London if he does indeed depart Stamford Bridge this summer.
