According to journalist Miles Starforth, midfielder Jonjo Shelvey has suffered a calf injury, and Steve Bruce has admitted he will be out of action for ‘a while’.

The English midfielder did not take part in Newcastle’s 1-0 defeat in their first pre-season friendly game against York City as a result of this injury.

Bruce also revealed that Shelvey suffered the injury before pre-season began as a result of his own fitness efforts, which will keep him out now for an unknown amount of time.

Shelvey featured heavily for Bruce in the 2020/21 campaign, which saw the midfielder play 30 times for the in the alone (via Transfermarkt).
