On the latest transfer video on the Hammers Chat YouTube channel, ‘Gonzo’ has been discussing West Ham United’s potential transfer summer business.

Whilst discussing a number of reported transfer claims, Gonzo revealed he had sent the West Ham owner, David Sullivan, a message on their summer spending.

Will Declan Rice leave West Ham this summer?

One question surrounding West Ham this summer will be the future of defender Issa Diop, who is being linked with a possible move to a number of Premier League clubs, according to Foot Mercato (via Sport Witness).

It is claimed Wolverhampton Wanderers, Crystal Palace and Southampton are all keeping an eye on the defender’s situation at the Hammers regarding a potential summer departure from the east London side.

The presenter revealed that on this occasion, he had not heard back from the West Ham owner, however, from previous experiences, he interpreted it in a positive way.

“I’ll tell you a story. I contacted David Sullivan the other day, I do it once in a while. And to be fair, he usually does reply, good or bad. I’m never rude, even if it’s bad news that I’m asking about that’s not going to be particularly flattering to the board. I asked a question. He does answer, David Sullivan does answer.”

“He didn’t answer me on transfers at all. Now, that’s absolutely fine. He doesn’t have to, why should he?

“But I very much asked the question. I said, Mr Sullivan, I understand you’re not going to tell me the names of targets. I don’t particularly want to know them. But is it safe to assume that the manager, David Moyes, has his targets in mind and you’re aware of them and there’s a sort of cohesive transfer strategy ongoing for this summer?

“Nothing. Didn’t get anything back.

“Now. I don’t think that means there isn’t one. I just think it means I ain’t speaking to you, I’m not speaking to anyone about transfers. Well, that’s a good thing, that’s fine. It was absolutely fine. So bearing in mind that is probably the policy of the club, is David Moyes likely to have been quoted by saying ‘I could be tempted by Issa Diop [leaving]’?

“I don’t know, but I do think that to be true.”

TIF Thoughts on West Ham’s transfer business…

For West Ham fans the main target will, of course, be being able to keep Declan Rice at the club for the upcoming season following an impressive Euro 2020 showing.

However, we think they do need to focus on adding to their squad this summer. For a lot of the season, David Moyes was playing without a recognised out-and-out striker, with Michail Antonio playing 26 times in the league up top (via Transfermarkt).

This upcoming season, the Hammers will be playing extra games as a result of their Europa League qualification. And in order to do well in Europe and the league, we think they will need a healthy squad with more options to choose from.

Therefore, it is not clear whether the radio silence from Sullivan on this occasion is a good thing if it indicates Diop may be sold – though at the very least, it could be taken that the club are busy navigating their way through a critical summer of business.
