Leeds United journalist Joe Mewis has recently talked about Rodrigo de Paul and his move to Atletico Madrid.

De Paul recently sealed a move to La Liga champions Atletico, as Los Rojiblancos shelled out a fee of £30 million to rope the Argentine in. De Paul has signed a contract till the summer of 2026. This move has come around a year after Leeds were looking to sign the midfielder.

Mewis talked about De Paul’s Udinese exit when he appeared on the latest episode of the The Blue White and Yellow podcast. The journalist described it to be a ‘ridiculous’ saga and Leeds’ approach never went beyond an initial enquiry last summer.

Should Leeds regret not signing De Paul?

He stated: “It’s been pretty ridiculous. The club have been saying for the best part of a year, ‘no, nothing in it’. Maybe, a first initial enquiry but it springs out all the social media cliches of the modern transfer saga, it’s him posting, it’s curious gossip columns trying to wheel the move on.

“I’m not too gutted that we’re not going to see Rodrigo De Paul’s name mentioned with Leeds United in the media for the foreseeable.”

TIF Thoughts on De Paul…

De Paul had consistently been an impressive performer for Udinese over the last few seasons, as he constantly contributed to goals and assists from the midfield while picking up very good Whoscored ratings too (as per WhoScored). Last season, in fact, he directly contributed to 18 goals in Serie A, which is pretty impressive.

Leeds' all-time top Premier League goalscorer is Mark Viduka but how many did he score?

It suggests that he’d have been a very good signing for Marcelo Bielsa’s side, but Leeds would’ve had to break their transfer record to sign the Argentine. They broke their transfer record only last summer to sign Rodrigo Moreno and doing that again this summer may not have been good for them in a financial sense.
