Speaking exclusively to This Is Futbol, former Aston Villa midfielder Lee Hendrie has explained how Jack Grealish is helping Matt Targett to thrive and ultimately give the Villans a deadly left flank.
Targett has been a part of the third-best defence in the Premier League this season, a defence that has conceded just 33 goals in 30 games.
It is a record that only Manchester City and Chelsea can better, really putting into perspective how solid Targett and the rest of Villa’s backline have been in the current campaign.
It has been the 25-year-old’s ability going forward, though, that has really impressed Hendrie, with the ex-Villa player quick to highlight Grealish’s role in his team-mate’s good form this season.
“He’s been really good. He’s been excellent for Villa,” Hendrie told TIF as he discussed Targett in an exclusive interview.
“He’s been getting forward, trying to create goals and I feel that when Jack plays, you see much more from Matty Targett. There’s more of a better understanding on that left-hand side because Jack filters out and because Jack’s got that ability to go inside, it does free up that space for Matt Targett to get into.”
If latest reports are true, then Manchester City could look to break up that partnership between the two English players.
According to Football Insider, the Citizens are ready to launch a huge bid to bring Grealish to the Etihad this summer.
