Illan Meslier impressed again on Friday night as Leeds beat Fulham 2-1 at Craven Cottage.
Meslier recorded five saves, three punches and two claims (via @LUFCDATA).
He made a particularly good stop to keep out Josh Maja’s half-volley in the first half.
There was little he could do prevent Joachim Andersen’s first-half equaliser, the 11th goal Leeds have conceded from a corner this season (via @OptaJoe).
Meslier has made a big impression in his first season in the top flight. Last week, Athletic journalist Adam Crafton admitted he was ‘in awe’ of the ‘gutsy’ 21-year-old.
He has earned a call-up for the group stages of the Under-21 European Championships this month, alongside Dimitry Bertaud and Nantes’ Alban Lafont.
And after another eye-catching display, a couple of Leeds supporters reckon he’s the prime candidate to seek Hugo Lloris in the French goal.
Lloris has 120 French caps under his belt and led the side to a World Cup but will turn 35 this year.
“Deserved a clean sheet for those 2 excellent saves. How many times this season has a set-piece been the only goal(s), we’ve conceded? Just thinking about how many more potential clean sheets he’d have if we could defend corners!!”
“Lloris, Areola, Meslier – I know who I’d pick out of that list on current form. But I understand he is still 21 so once Lloris is done, Meslier will slot right into the French squad”
“£5m – I have a feeling he will prove to be one of the best value signings we’ve ever made”
“His reactions are astonishing and strength in his wrists and hands immense!”
“He will become the French number 1.”
“He played brilliantly last night!”
“Absolutely incredible! Great performance at the right time. Thanks!”
Clearly, these fans enjoyed Meslier’s performance and are unsurprisingly backing him to become a success at Elland Road.
