Podcaster Chris Sermanni has recently made a claim about former Celtic goalkeeper Fraser Forster.

Sermanni was a guest on the latest episode of The Cynic Weekly podcast and the panel discussed multiple issues involving the Bhoys. One topic of discussion was the club’s goalkeeper situation. Sermanni said that if he was given a choice, he would have wanted Forster to return and one would be ‘daft’ to have not wanted the Englishman back at Parkhead in the summer transfer window.

Which of the following clubs has Shane Duffy never played for?

Celtic signed Vasilis Barkas from AEK Athens as Forster decided to fight for his place at Southampton. Neil Lennon had confirmed that while Celtic and Southampton had agreed a deal for him, things had gone quiet from the player’s end as negotiations collapsed. Forster is currently valued at £5.85m.

Can Barkas replicate Fraser Forster?

Sermanni made it clear that he would have liked it if Forster had returned to Parkhead this summer.

He said: “I would want Forster, I’ve already said that. Forster is the best keeper I’ve seen at Celtic. Forster [had] probably the best season at Celtic last year. I think you’d be daft to not have wanted him to come back. It might have been another loan and we would be in that position again, but how colossal he was for us last season would mean that if I was given a choice, I would have brought him back this season.”

TIF Thoughts…

Forster had arrived at Celtic on loan from Southampton in the summer of 2019 and he was a regular for the club in the 2019/20 season. His highlights included penalty saves in the League Cup final against Rangers and in the Europa League Round of 32 first leg against Copenhagen.

It shows how reliable a goalkeeper he was in big games for Celtic and keeping that in mind, it is understandable why Sermanni would have liked the Englishman back at Parkhead. With Barkas now already signed, Celtic fans can only hope that the Greek goalkeeper replicates Forster’s performances in time.
