During a recent edition of NUFC Matters, Steve Wraith and Liam Kennedy spent some time talking about a tweet that was recently posted by sports lawyer Nick De Marco QC.

De Marco and his colleague Shaheed Fatima QC are acting for the Toon as current Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley is reportedly ‘thought to be trying to prove there is no case in law’ for the Premier League to block the Saudi-backed takeover of the North East club.

Who will the Toon play in the next round of the Carabao Cup after they beat Newport County on penalties?

Earlier this week, De Marco took to Twitter to post a picture of some ‘home-baked bread’ which caught the attention of many Toon supporters, and during this recent edition of NUFC Matters, Kennedy talked about some of the messages that may have been included in this image and what they might mean.

He said: “On the Nick De Marco thing – he’s a QC who’s getting hundreds of messages off Newcastle United fans, daily, weekly, and I think there [were] deliberate messages within that tweet.

“I’m not going to say he’s saying it’s done, it’s coming to a conclusion – I genuinely think he was putting a message out there and again, a qualifier by this is by saying it’s my opinion, he was probably just letting everybody know that he’s hearing it, he’s hearing the messages that you’re putting to him, he’s hearing all the tweets you’re [tagging] him in.

“I think the fact there was Newcastle Brown [Ale] in the background and the name of the champagne being ‘Blanc de Noirs’ was probably, I think, a little coincidental should he have put it there and not realised the impact, given that he’s getting hundreds of messages per day from Newcastle United fans with regards to this takeover; I think it was very deliberate what he did.

“I think he was kind of letting everybody know that things are still ongoing and we know they are – things are still ongoing, they’re not dead in the water.

“I think everybody in this process – and this is fans included – have to buy into this, that we’re almost certainly playing the long game and I think the more people realise that, the better.

“It’s not something that’s going to pop up immediately in the next week, in the next month, don’t take too much literally from what Nick De Marco said, but I do think this is something that’s going on in the background and it’s something that we can definitely take some kind of positives from.”

TIF Thoughts…

Judging by what Kennedy had to say, it seems that he doesn’t believe De Marco’s recent tweet necessarily means that he has been successful in his attempts to prove that there is no reason that the Saudi-backed Toon takeover should be blocked, but he also seemingly thinks that the lawyer was deliberately sending messages to Newcastle United fans, which Kennedy thinks is a positive for Toon fans.

While this may well have been a positive message for Newcastle supporters, we feel that it would be wise for Toon fans to wait for more official updates on this process and avoid reading too much into things like this, which don’t really prove anything.
