Football journalist John Cross has shared his thoughts on Manchester United’s reported potential deal to bring Edinson Cavani to Old Trafford on a free transfer.

This comes after Cross recently made an appearance on a transfer deadline day video from the Daily Mirror’s YouTube channel where he discussed the latest transfer-related news stories in the Premier League.

How well do you remember the action from the opening weekend of the Premier League? - 1. Who scored the first goal of the season?

After it was recently reported that United could be set to sign the striker on a two-year deal, Cross shared his thoughts on this potential move from the Manchester club.

He said: “It’s a panic buy, and a club the size of Man United should not be doing panic buys, they really shouldn’t be. They shouldn’t even, I don’t think, be going right to the end of the window.

“They should have made their statement signings at the start of the window to give them the best possible introduction to be oven-ready, as Boris [Johnson] might say, for the Premier League.

“I mean, it doesn’t take a genius, it’s bad transfer planning.”

The 33-year-old, who is currently valued at £18 million, has been without a club since July after he left his previous club Paris Saint-Germain after being there for the past seven years (per Transfermarkt).

During his time with PSG, the Uruguayan made a total of 301 appearances for the club across all competitions in which he managed to score 200 goals and provide 43 assists along the way.

TIF Thoughts…

Looking at Cavani’s goals and assists record for his previous club, he certainly has the experience in him that could make him a massive goalscoring threat for United if he does make the move to the club before the current summer transfer window closes.

However, given how United recently lost 6-1 to Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League at the weekend, our view is that United would probably be better off strengthening their defence rather than signing a new striker like Cavani.
