Football journalist David Ornstein has been sharing some details on Arsenal’s reported transfer interest in Chelsea midfielder Jorginho.

This comes as Ornstein recently co-hosted the latest episode of The Athletic’s Ornstein & Chapman Podcast where he discussed the latest goings-on regarding a number of different Premier League clubs.

In what month did Mikel Arteta take over as the Arsenal boss?

After it was previously reported that Arsenal wanted to sign the Italian midfielder before the summer transfer window ended earlier in the week, Ornstein had this to say on the matter.

He said: “Arsenal did explore the possibility of signing Jorginho from Chelsea, but I don’t think that was realistic. I don’t think Chelsea were ever likely to want to strengthen Arsenal and I’m not sure he was available, full stop.”

Chelsea signed the midfielder back in the 2018 summer transfer window from Napoli for a fee of £51.3 million. Since then, the 28-year-old has made a total of 102 appearances for Frank Lampard’s side across all competitions, in which he has managed to score 12 goals and provide three assists along the way (per Transfermarkt).

Jorginho, who is currently valued at £46.8 million, has had a decent start to the season with Chelsea having earned himself a season rating of 7.26/10 (as per WhoScored) for his performances in the Premier League so far.

Would you have taken Jorginho at Arsenal if they didn't sign Thomas Partey?

TIF Thoughts…

According to Ornstein, it appears that a potential move for Jorginho from Arsenal was never really likely to happen. Given how Arsenal managed to sign Thomas Partey from Atletico Madrid before the transfer deadline earlier in the week, it would seem unlikely that Mikel Arteta’s side would explore the possibility of signing Jorginho again any time soon.
