Pundit Lawrence Connolly has recently been talking about the possibility of Celtic signing another centre-back this summer.

Connolly was a guest on the latest episode of the ‘A Celtic State of Mind’ podcast and the panel discussed multiple issues involving the Bhoys. Connolly talked about potential Celtic transfers. He believes that there is a lot of noise about the club signing a centre-back.

Which player played the highest number of minutes in all competitions for Celtic in the 2019/20 season?

Kristoffer Ajer has been linked with a move away from Celtic this summer and the club has already signed Shane Duffy, who has arrived on loan from Brighton and Hove Albion. The Hoops have also drawn links with a move to sign Philadelphia Union defender Mark McKenzie.

Connolly discussed the possibility of Celtic signing a centre-back. He wondered if Peter Lawwell could spring a ‘surprise’ by signing a centre-back without selling one of Celtic’s own players in that position.

He said: “That’s where the rumours are coming from – that Celtic are still interested in these centre-halves. There seems to be more noise about that position. Maybe it could be that we’re actually just genuinely looking at another centre-half because we think we’re a bit light for the quality that [Neil Lennon] wants there.

Do you think Celtic will sign another centre-back this summer?

“Maybe Peter’s going to surprise us all and just go and buy another centre-half and not sell anyone.”

TIF Thoughts…

Along with Shane Duffy, Celtic currently have four out-and-out options in the centre-back position. Nir Bitton can also play in the centre-back position (as per Transfermarkt).

The Hoops have played in a back three in recent games and they played in a back three a lot of times in the second half of the 2019/20 campaign as well. So if they keep using that system, they might just need some extra depth in the centre-back position and that will only help Lennon and his team.

And while Ajer has been linked with a move away from the club, they could need a potential replacement for him if he does leave. So if they are looking to add some depth in that position, perhaps we will see Celtic sign another centre-back before the current transfer window closes, irrespective of whether Ajer leaves or not.
