Podcaster Chris Sermanni has recently praised Celtic youngster Jeremie Frimpong for his abilities and talent.

Sermanni featured on the latest episode of the Cynic Weekly podcast and the panel discussed many issues involving the Hoops. Sermanni talked about the situation of the club’s defence and this led to him praising Frimpong for his abilities. He hailed the youngster as a ‘next-level talent’.

Frimpong joined Celtic from Manchester City in September 2019 for a fee of £342k. Frimpong made 19 appearances in all competitions for the club’s first-team last season. He made 14 Premiership appearances and directly contributed to five goals as well.

Starting with an easy one - which club did Celtic sign Moussa Dembele from?

Sermanni was full of praise for Frimpong and he believes that the youngster came up with an ‘unbelievable’ performance in Celtic’s loss to Ferencvaros in the second qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League.

He said: “[Hatem Abd] Elhamed’s a guy who is steady – quite good going forward, maybe a bit better than quite good. He’s solid defensively and he’s never really let us down, generally speaking, but Frimpong is a talent, a next-level talent.

Is Frimpong Celtic's best young talent?

“I’m just going to make the comparison [with Greg Taylor] once and then leave it at that. When you see Frimpong bursting into the box and taking a man off and even lifting his head up in looking to bring the ball back, the juxtaposition between the two full-backs is unbelievable.

“See that Ferencvaros game, that team must have been thanking their lucky stars that they had only seen 20 minutes of him. Because that injection of pace – the way he was driving us forward, the way he was just destroying the full-back, it was absolutely unbelievable. I think sometimes, it is easy to forget he’s a young guy and he’s still got lots to learn and he’ll continue to develop, but just the raw potential and ability he’s got, I think we need to find a place for it just now because he definitely drives us forward.”

TIF Thoughts…

Frimpong has been quite a regular part of the club’s first-team this season. He’s made five appearances in all competitions. In the Premiership, he has played four games and has already contributed to a couple of goals. He scored in the club’s first game of the season and got an assist against Motherwell (as per Transfermarkt).

For his performances in the league, the youngster has racked up a rating of 6.98 and nine players have picked up better ratings than him. He has completed the joint-third highest number of dribbles per game and has come up with the joint-fourth highest number of key passes per game as well (as per Whoscored).

Clearly, Frimpong is a talented player and he has shown some of his abilities already.  He is still only 19 and might still improve a lot as a footballer, so Celtic fans should be excited about what the future holds for the youngster.
