On the latest episode of the View from The Lane podcast for The Athletic, Jack Pitt-Brooke, James Maw and Charlie Eccleshare have been discussing the latest goings-on at Tottenham Hotspur, whilst reflecting on the recently-released episodes of the All or Nothing Spurs documentary.

One topic of discussion on the recent podcast, which was titled ‘Mourinho v Rose – All or Nothing reaction‘ was Spurs’ recent appointment of Trevor Birch.

Which player scored Spurs' first goal of the Premier League campaign?

The north London club confirmed the board restructure earlier this month which saw Birch take over as Director of Football Operations, whilst Rebecca Caplehorn took on a new role as Director of Football Administration and Governance and Steve Hitchen was promoted to Technical Performance Director (per Tottenham Hotspur).

Here’s what Eccleshare had to say about the appointment during the podcast:

“He is someone with tons of experience. He’s been at lots of clubs: Chelsea, Everton briefly, Leeds, Portsmouth and doing a real variety of roles. He’s a former footballer himself, but has trained as an accountant.

“What people say about him, speaking to various people who’ve worked with him, or been [in] supporters groups with him, is that he is someone who has a really good financial knowledge, but also does understand the way football works from top to bottom.

“He has that experience and he also has a human touch; he’s tended to get on very well with supporters at the clubs he’s been at, which, considering some of the roles he’s done – he’s clearly doing something right.”

He later adds:

“Having someone like Trevor Birch come in with that experience, he’s almost going to be like a managing director, so really involved in the day-to-day operations and he’s someone who has a very wide book of contacts, so that’s going to be very handy for transfers.

“He’s said to be a very good negotiator, very different from Daniel Levy, not quite as uncompromising in his style, so hopefully, that will be a good counter-balance. So, it sounds like he’s going to bring a lot to the table.”

TIF Thoughts…

From what Eccleshare suggests, Birch will bring a wealth of experience with him to his new role at Tottenham Hotspur and could be a potentially big boost in terms of future transfer dealings, so it certainly seems as if he is an exciting appointment and will be able to have a big impact at the north London club going forward.
