Speaking recently on his Ask Ornstein YouTube show, David Ornstein provided an update on some of the rumours during the summer transfer window, and in particular, the potential move of Georginio Wijnaldum away from Liverpool.

Since signing for Liverpool from Newcastle United in what was a £24.75 million deal back in 2016, Wijnaldum has gone on to make 188 appearances for the club, scoring 19 goals and providing 16 assists along the way.

Last season, the £36 million-rated 29-year-old made 37 Premier League appearances for Liverpool in their title-winning campaign, scoring four goals and averaging a WhoScored match rating of 6.81/10.

However, despite being a regular player in Liverpool’s historic season last term, there have been rumours of a potential exit from Merseyside for the Netherlands international this summer, with Barcelona said to be interested in making a move for Wijnaldum.

This is something that Ornstein discussed on a recent edition of the Ask Ornstein YouTube show, in which the journalist said that Liverpool would have liked to have moved on more players than they have so far in the transfer window, as well as touching on the speculation surrounding Wijnaldum.

He said: “In any normal market, I think Liverpool would have hoped – been confident, even – of having shifted bodies by this point and for decent prices, but this isn’t a normal market, and they’re not the only club finding that.

“At senior level, I think there’s still going to be a lot of speculation around Gini Wijnaldum, but there are no developments on that one to my knowledge, and then around the fringes, there’ll be a number of players, too, that it will be hoped can be moved on in the coming weeks.”

TIF Thoughts…

From Ornstein’s comments, it would appear that the journalist does indeed feel that Liverpool will be hoping to move on several players in the transfer window, although, as far as he is aware, there has been no movement regarding the potential exit of Wijnaldum.

However, with it being recently confirmed that Liverpool are close to landing Thiago Alcantara from Bayern Munich, there will be more competition for places in the middle of the park for the Reds.

Despite this, a report by the Liverpool Echo stated that Liverpool’s seemingly imminent capture of Thiago does not necessarily spell the end for Wijnaldum.

As for whether or not this is true, we will have to wait and see how things develop regarding the 29-year-old over the last weeks of the transfer window.
