Talking the Blues podcast host ‘Paul The Esk’ has recently discussed possible replacements for Jordan Pickford in the event Everton decide to sell the English goalkeeper.

The Toffees secured the arrival of the 26-year-old shot-stopper from Sunderland in the summer of 2017 after paying an initial fee of £25m which had the potential to rise to £30m (per BBC).

However, during the most recent Premier League season, Pickford received criticism for his mistakes, which the goalkeeper later stated was unfair.

It was recently reported by The Mirror that the Toffees are eyeing a summer transfer swoop for Manchester United ‘keeper Sergio Romero to ‘challenge’ Pickford.

So, on the latest episode of the Talking the Blues podcast, the host discussed some considerations if Carlo Ancelotti was to consider shipping out their current number one.

To kick-off this quiz on Carlo Ancelotti on the side of easy, which side was his first game on the touchline at Goodison Park against?

He said: “If we sold him [in] this current window, his book value – meaning how much is left on the balance sheet in terms of his cost – [is] around about £17m.

“So, anything that we get above £17m for him appears as profit. We’d also reduce our costs to the tune of around about £9-9.5m a year when you take into account wages and amortisation.

“So, let’s say for argument’s sake that we got £25m for Jordan Pickford, that would put the club in a net positive position of around about £17m. So, that would be very good business for us.

“Now, it might be that Jordan Pickford is worth more than £25m – [but] who knows in this transfer market what anybody’s worth, frankly, because the valuations go all over the place.”

TIF Thoughts…

As can be seen in what the podcast host had to say, if the club were to sell Pickford for somewhere around the fee they bought him for, that would put Everton in a “net positive position”.

If a £25m bid arrived for Jordan Pickford, would you want it accepted?

With four seasons left on his contract at Goodison Park, the goalkeeper has a current market value of £25.2m according to Transfermarkt, so it seems he is still worth around what Everton paid for him.

However, following a season which saw Pickford rated as third-worst goalkeeper in the Premier League of those to play over five matches (per WhoScored), it is clear to see why there is talk of replacing him.

Only Kepa Arrizabalaga and Angus Gunn made more than five appearances in the top flight and delivered worse than Pickford’s 6.4/10 average rating.

So, it will certainly be interesting to see if Ancelotti does decide to replace the English ‘keeper this summer.
