Aston Villa journalist Dan Bardell has been sharing his thoughts on Villa striker Mbwana Samatta and his future at the club.

This comes after Bardell recently made an appearance on the latest episode of The Villa View Podcast where he spoke about the latest transfer-related topics surrounding Dean Smith’s side at the moment.

In this 2019/20 season quiz, do you remember who scored Villa's first PL goal of the season?

On the topic of Villa’s current crop of strikers and what the recent arrival of Ollie Watkins means for them, Bardell shared his thoughts on Samatta specifically.

He said: “It sounds like Samatta could be in trouble, to be honest, I think we’d probably not make too much of a loss on him and I think we paid about £8 million for him – we might get that back if he was to go somewhere in Turkey or somewhere like that.

“So if I was him, I’d be quite worried, because he never really got going, did he? Yes, he scored in the cup final, but after lockdown, he weren’t very good at all, let’s be honest. He just looked a little bit lost.”

Villa signed the striker in the previous January transfer window from KRC Genk for a fee of £9.45 million after Wesley suffered a serious injury in the same month.

Since he arrived at Villa Park, Samatta has made 16 appearances for the club across all competitions but only managed to score two goals in that time.

TIF Thoughts…

Given how Samatta didn’t exactly hit the ground running in terms of scoring goals when he arrived at Villa, it’s understandable why Bardell thinks his place in the squad could be in danger during the current transfer window.

In our view, it would be unfair if Villa sold the striker this summer without giving him a full season at the club to prove himself as a useful player.
