Aston Villa journalist James Rushton has dismissed any chance of the Birmingham club making a potential summer transfer move for Argentina striker Gonzalo Higuain.

This comes after Rushton recently made an appearance on the Birmingham Mail’s Claret & Blue Podcast where he spoke about the latest news topics concerning Dean Smith’s side at the moment.

In this 2019/20 season quiz, do you remember who scored Villa's first PL goal of the season?

After it was previously reported by Italian media outlet La Repubblica (via Birmingham Mail) that Villa and fellow Premier League side West Ham United have enquired about the possibility of signing Higuain this summer, Rushton shared his thoughts on this potential move and why he thinks it won’t happen.

He said: “I think people wanted a higher profile of player. I don’t think that’s going to happen, like Gonzalo Higuain [has been] linked – £270k a week, he is on, so there is absolutely no chance that he fits in at a club like Villa, unfortunately.”

This figure of Higuain’s weekly wages came from when it was previously reported that the striker was earning £270k-a-week during his loan spell at Chelsea from Juventus that began in January 2019 to the end of the 2018/19 season.

During his time at the west London club, the 32-year-old, who is currently valued at £13.5 million, made 18 appearances but only managed to score five goals during his time in England.

Last month, it was revealed by Juventus manager Andrea Pirlo that Higuain would not be continuing at the Italian club, which led to him being linked with a move back to England with Villa and West Ham named as potential suitors.

TIF Thoughts…

Given how Higuain only managed to score five goals during his spell at Chelsea, it may be a smart decision from Villa to not make a move for the striker this summer and have to pay his reported hefty weekly wages.
