Frankie Francis and former Sunderland player Danny Collins were joined by current Black Cats attacker Chris Maguire on the latest edition of the SAFC Unfiltered podcast with the winger spending some time talking about Sunderland’s ambitions for the 2020/21 campaign.

Maguire joined the Black Cats in the summer of 2018 and he has made 84 appearances for the club thus far, scoring 20 goals and providing 20 assists.

As per the BBC, the Black Cats took up ‘the option of a further year’ on the 31-year-old Scot’s deal earlier this summer, which means that the player will remain at the club until the end of June 2021 – and spent some time talking about his side’s ambitions for the coming season during his recent appearance on the SAFC Unfiltered podcast.

The £315k-rated player said: “Our main objective I think, before the gaffer drums it into us anyway, as players is – this season we have got to win the league, there’s no question about it.

“This is our third year in League One and I’ve been here from the start, and it’s not where we want to be, we want to be promoted and get to the Championship.”

TIF Thoughts…

So, as can be seen in what the Sunderland player had to say during this recent podcast appearance, it’s clear that he believes that nothing less than a first-place finish will be acceptable in the 2020/21 campaign.

As Maguire explained, Sunderland will be entering their third consecutive campaign in England’s third tier next season, and considering that they were competing in the Premier League as recently as the 2016/17 campaign, it may be reasonable to assume that Black Cats fans are likely growing weary of life in League One.

With all of that in mind, we believe that it will be encouraging for Black Cats supporters to hear one of their players setting the goal of winning the league next season.
