Pundit Stevie Mullen has recently made a claim about Celtic’s chase of David Turnbull and the club’s progress in the ongoing summer transfer window.

Mullen was a guest on the latest episode of ‘A Celtic State of Mind’ podcast and the panel discussed many issues surrounding the Parkhead club. They talked about many potential Celtic transfers and while talking about the club’s chase of Motherwell midfielder David Turnbull, Mullen revealed that the Hoops have held talks with multiple players and a lot of things will depend on their progress in European competition.

Starting with an easy one - which club did Celtic sign Moussa Dembele from?

The Hoops have already signed three players this summer. Mohamed Elyounoussi has joined on loan from Southampton once again and the Hoops have signed both Vasilis Barkas and Albian Ajeti on a permanent basis from AEK Athens and West Ham United respectively.

Do you think Celtic will sign Turnbull this summer?

Yes, we will

Yes, we will

No, we won't

No, we won't

As for Turnbull, the Hoops have ‘stepped up’ their scouting of the Motherwell man and it has been said that there is a ‘growing likelihood’ of Celtic making a move for the midfielder (as per the Scottish Sun).

Mullen revealed that he ‘spoke to somebody’ who is ‘very close’ to the Turnbull deal and went on to talk about how Celtic are operating in the market in a general sense.

He said: “[I] spoke to somebody very close to that deal this morning. Celtic, Stoke and Newcastle are all interested in the boy. Spoke to somebody at Celtic yesterday, talks have taken place with a variety of players and it looks as if something will be done. A lot is dependent on European progress.

“If they go [far in European competition], then these guys will be signing. I couldn’t say if specifically, Turnbull is [the] one. There is definite interest and Gavin Strachan scouted him at the weekend.”

TIF Thoughts…

Celtic had agreed a fee to sign Turnbull in the summer of 2019, but the move fell through as he was unable to complete a medical after suffering a long-term injury. Football Insider have already claimed that the midfielder is still ‘very keen’ on a move to Parkhead.

Clearly, there is interest from both ends of the deal as the Hoops are clearly keeping an eye on him and Turnbull wants the move as well.

Neil Lennon’s men have already reached the Champions League qualifying second round by beating KR Reykjavik and they’ll face Ferencváros in the next round.  So if their transfer business really depends on European progress, Celtic would need to beat Ferencváros next week and go as far as they possibly can.
