Sport Bild journalist Christian Falk recently featured as a guest on the Beautiful Game podcast, in which he discussed Chelsea’s impending move for Bayer Leverkusen ace Kai Havertz.

Frank Lampard’s side have regularly been linked with a move for the 21-year-old throughout the window so far, and recent reports have suggested that the two sides are close to reaching an agreement for the German international’s transfer.

Falk also suggested that the sides were close to an agreement on the fee for Havertz – but did shed light on a possible stumbling block surrounding bonuses which could be prolonging the length of negotiations.

Here’s what Falk had to say about the latest on the deal during the podcast:

“We’re still waiting, hour by hour, when the news [is] coming. We know from Leverkusen that they thought it could be done [by] Friday, I’m not sure that they will make it. I think they’re very close, the parties – and we’re talking about the clubs – because of the price and it’s a question of add-ons. €80 million should be paid directly and then 10 [million] and 10 [million].

“The question is in which case Leverkusen would get this money, I heard in the first negotiations Chelsea said one part is for winning the Champions League, Leverkusen isn’t so keen on this because you can’t win it every year. I think it will happen soon and on Monday we need Kai Havertz in our German national team so it would be good to do the deal before [then].”

TIF Thoughts…

From what Falk suggests, the two sides are very close to an agreement and an announcement could be made by Chelsea in the coming days, although there is still the issue of in which scenario the Bundesliga side would receive the proposed add-on fees in the future.

Do you think Havertz will be completed this weekend?

No

If the 21-year-old can continue to perform as he did last season, when he contributed 12 goals and six assists in the Bundesliga; averaging a superb 7.24 rating (per Whoscored), then we see no reason why he can’t help the Stamford Bridge outfit to significant success in the next few years, which would no doubt lead to Bayer Leverkusen receiving money in add-ons.
