Marley Anderson, Feargal Brennan and Niall McCaughan appeared on a recent edition of the Football Social Daily podcast to discuss all things Premier League and during the show, Anderson spent some time talking about Aston Villa attacker Trezeguet and his performances for the club during the most recent Premier League season.

After earning promotion to the Premier League via the 2018/19 Championship play-offs, it may be fair to say that Villa invested heavily in their playing squad ahead of and during the 2019/20 campaign, as they had the highest net transfer spend of any club in England’s top-flight last season.

Trezeguet was one of the players who moved to Villa Park last summer, joining the Villans from Turkish side Kasimpasa for a £9m transfer fee and during this recent edition of the Football Social Daily podcast, Anderson shared his thoughts on the £7.2m-rated Egyptian’s performances for Villa during the 2019/20 campaign.

In this 2019/20 season quiz, do you remember who scored Villa's first PL goal of the season?

Anderson said: “You look at Aston Villa last season and who were their best players? Obviously [Jack] Grealish, who was always already there and John McGinn, I would say. Other than them, I think the best players they had were still their own players. I think maybe the best signing they had that played most of the season was Trezeguet, but even he was rubbish for most of the season, he just popped up with a couple of important goals at the end.”

Do you think that Trezeguet was a good signing for Aston Villa?

TIF Thoughts…

Trezeguet ended the 2019/20 campaign as Villa’s second-highest Premier League goalscorer, netting on six occasions in his 34 appearances in England’s top-flight. However, three of his six league goals came in Villa’s final four games of the league season.

Considering that Trezeguet scored half of his league goals in his side’s final four games of the season, it may be understandable why Anderson was somewhat critical of the Egyptian attacker’s performances over the majority of the campaign.

However, It may be fair to say that Trezeguet’s goals did help Villa to avoid relegation last season and as a result, perhaps his signing did ultimately prove to be a positive one for the Villans in the end.
