Many Celtic fans have been talking about the club’s links with a move to sign Rapid Vienna midfielder Dejan Ljubicic.

The Daily Mail recently reported about Ljubicic, saying that Celtic are one of the clubs interested in signing the midfielder. They said that while Brentford are weighing up a move for Ljubicic, Celtic have ‘also discussed’ a move for the midfielder even though the player has attracted interest from Russia and Germany.

Starting with an easy one- apart from Paris Saint-Germain, which other French club did Edouard play for?

It is said that the 22-year-old was close to joining Major League Soccer side Chicago Fire in January, but the move didn’t go through because of some injury issues.

CelticBible recently relayed this information on Twitter. Many Celtic fans flocked to this tweet and made their opinion known. Some thought that Ljubicic wouldn’t be a good move. Others refused to believe the news.

Is there a point of Celtic signing Ljubicic?

No, that will be a pointless move

The Daily Mail’s report described Ljubicic as a holding midfielder who has a ‘good passing range’ and that he ‘reads the game well’. They claim that Rapid are willing to let him leave for a fee of £2 million and the player is ‘keen to move’ as well (via Daily Mail).

Despite this, some others also refused to believe the news and made their opinion very clear.

The 2019/20 season has seen Ljubicic make 23 appearances in all competitions for Rapid. 22 of those appearances have come in the league. He has found the back of the net twice, picking up a single assist (via Transfermarkt).

While the Austrian is a regular in midfield for his club, Celtic did sign Ismaila Soro in the January transfer window. The Ivorian is yet to play a single game for the Hoops so far. Apart from him, Celtic still have Scott Brown, Callum McGregor and Olivier Ntcham. Nir Bitton can also play in midfield.

So clearly, Celtic don’t really need a midfielder at this point. Even though Ljubicic won’t be too expensive, signing him may not make too much sense.
