Celtic podcaster Chris Sermanni has criticised goalkeeper Scott Bain and has made his concerns about him very clear.

Sermanni was recently present on the latest episode of The Cynic podcast and the panel discussed many issues involving the Glasgow-based club. The goalkeeping department at Parkhead was a topic of discussion that came up during the show and Sermanni talked about Bain and his situation at the club.

Starting with an easy one- apart from Paris Saint-Germain, which other French club did Edouard play for?

Bain has been at Celtic since the summer of 2018 when the goalkeeper joined the club from Dundee FC on a free transfer. He has previously plied his trade with Alloa Athletic and Hibernian as well (via Transfermarkt).

When talking about Bain, Sermanni said:

“I’ve never thought he was good enough to be number one.”

Is Bain good enough to be Celtic's first-choice goalkeeper?

No chance at all

Yes, he can do a job

He went on to say: “For me, to not save that shot [against Paris Saint-Germain] just really underlined the problem we’ve got in the goalkeeping department. I’m getting a little bit worried about the goalkeeping situation because Bain’s fine just being there as the back-up, but if you went into the first game of the season with him as your goalkeeper and [Conor] Hazard or whoever as the number two, that’s concerning.

“We’re being linked with goalkeepers, but nothing overly concrete. We were linked with Robin Olsen today – he’s rotten. The names that we’re linked with – [Fraser] Forster doesn’t seem to be going on. The [Vasilios] Barkas link from Greece doesn’t seem to be happening.”

Sermanni doesn’t think that Bain can be the regular first-choice goalkeeper at Parkhead and has some worries about that position at Celtic.

TIF Thoughts

Bain, currently 28, wasn’t a regular in the 2019/20 season and could make only eight appearances in all competitions for the Bhoys. He made only a couple of Premiership appearances and they came early on in the campaign (via Transfermarkt).

Neil Lennon has already confirmed that the Hoops haven’t had success in their approach for Forster and are looking for a new goalkeeper in the summer. This shows that Bain isn’t seen as being ready to be the club’s first-choice for the coming season.

The Hoops have been linked with moves for Robin Olsen and Vasilios Barkas, so it shows that work is being done in that department and Bain might indeed end up being a back-up like he was last season.
