Journalist Gabriel Antoniazzi has been talking about Celtic’s chances of potentially signing Motherwell midfielder David Turnbull.

Antoniazzi was recently hosting the latest episode of PLZ Soccer’s The Football Show and the panel included journalist Alison McConnell and former Hoops player Darren Jackson. They talked about many potential transfers in Scottish football and one thing Antoniazzi spoke about was Turnbull and whether Celtic will look to sign him this summer.

Starting with an easy one- apart from Paris Saint-Germain, which other French club did Edouard play for?

Turnbull was close to joining Celtic in the summer of 2019. The Hoops and Motherwell had agreed a fee for the midfielder, but Turnbull failed the medical as it was reported that he needed ‘immediate preventative’ knee surgery.

Antoniazzi answered a question from a fan about whether the Hoops could go back for the midfielder this summer. He said: “I don’t think this window would be the one they go for [Turnbull].

Is it risky to sign Turnbull at this point?

Yes, too risky

Yes, too risky

No, we should sign him

No, we should sign him

“Maybe if he gets back into the team and is scoring goals again like he did two campaigns ago, then we’ll see Celtic going for him – perhaps at Christmas, perhaps next summer. But not yet.”

The journalist seems pretty sure that the Hoops will not go for Turnbull this summer, but there is a chance that they go for him once the Motherwell man starts to score goals for his club once again. Turnbull is currently valued at £1.62 million by Transfermarkt.

TIF Thoughts…

Turnbull had been in great form for his club in the 2018/19 season. He had made 34 appearances in all competitions for Motherwell and scored 16 goals while picking up seven assists. Because of the knee problem, the 21-year-old missed 35 games and returned to action in the second half of the previous season and made a couple of Premiership appearances.

While he is back from injury, Celtic may not want to sign him on the basis of how well he played two seasons ago. They might want to see him get back to that level in the upcoming campaign to give them an assurance of Turnbull’s quality. So it would be sensible for them to wait and see how the 2020/21 season goes for the midfielder.
