According to recent reports, Manchester City are interested in the summer signing of Borussia Mönchengladbach midfielder Denis Zakaria.

The reports by Rheinische Post (via Ronan Murphy) claim that Borussia Mönchengladbach are prepared to sell the 23-year-old this summer should they receive a bid of €50 million (£45.2 million).

Man City fan? We bet you can't get 100% on this Yaya Toure quiz. We'll start you off with an easy one... Who did Yaya Toure sign for City from back in 2010?

Since joining Mönchengladbach from BSC Young Boys in what was a £10.8 million deal back in 2017, Zakaria has gone on to establish himself as first-team regular for the Bundesliga side, making 96 appearances for the club, over which he has scored eight goals and provided six assists.

This season, the £36 million-rated Switzerland international stood out for his side, as over his 23 Bundesliga appearances, the midfielder averaged 2.1 tackles, 1.6 interceptions and 1.1 clearances per game, as well as chipping in with two goals and two assists, and averaging an impressive WhoScored match rating of 7.15/10.

TIF Thoughts…

Despite the obviously impressive returns of Zakaria this season, the argument could be made that City are not exactly in need of another defensive midfielder, as Pep Guardiola currently has the likes of Rodri, Fernandinho and Ilkay Gündogan capable of operating from that position.

Having said that, with another alternative in Ante Palaversa being a youth prospect with minimal experience, and Fernandinho now being 35 years old, the counter-argument could be made that City will require a new player in the position sooner rather than later, and with Borussia Mönchengladbach reportedly keen to sell this summer for what is a relatively reasonable price, now could be the perfect opportunity.
