Football finance expert Kieran Maguire has shared some insight into Liverpool’s owners, the Fenway Sports Group (FSG), and how they would have reacted to the news on Manchester City’s UEFA ban being overturned.

This comes after Maguire recently made an appearance on the Liverpool Echo’s Blood Red Podcast to talk about the financial side of football at the moment.

On the topic of FSG and how they would have reacted to City’s recent verdict from the Court of Arbitration for Sport who found the Manchester club not guilty of “disguising equity funds as sponsorship contributions”, Maguire shared his thoughts on the situation.

He said: “The Liverpool owners won’t be happy with the decision because Manchester City are a competitor, but I think they won’t be in a position to do anything.

“I can’t see them throwing their toys out of the pram and wanting to sell the club on the basis of this decision. I think they’ll just be quietly gnashing their teeth.”

Back in February, UEFA handed City a two-year ban for allegedly breaking their financial regulations. Now that CAS have found them not guilty of any misgivings in that area, City will now be able to compete in the Champions League for the next two seasons.

TIF Thoughts…

If Maguire thinks that FSG will be unhappy by the fact that City were found to have not broken any European financial laws and will now be able to play in the Champions League, this must mean that they see City as a big threat to Liverpool’s chances in winning titles, whether that be the Champions League or the Premier League title.

The fact that Maguire said that FSG see City as a “competitor” shows that they are wary of how far the Manchester club could go in each competition next season.
