According to recent reports, Newcastle United are interested in a summer move for Crystal Palace left-back Patrick van Aanholt.

The reports in The Sun on Sunday (via Sportslens) claim that Newcastle view Van Aanholt as a suitable alternative to Tottenham Hotspur left-back Danny Rose, who joined the North East club on loan in the January transfer window, but has so far failed to impress for the Magpies, averaging a disappointing WhoScored match rating of 6.44/10 over his nine Premier League appearances for the club.

Meanwhile, Van Aanholt has been enjoying a better season in south London, scoring three goals and providing two assists over his 29 Premier League appearances for the Eagles, averaging a WhoScored match rating of 6.76.

However, whether or not Palace will be willing to part with the £8.55 million-rated defender remains to be seen, but considering that since his £9.45m move from Sunderland back in 2017, the Netherlands international has played 111 times for the club, in addition to the fact that Van Aanholt is the only senior left-back in Roy Hodgson’s squad, it seems that the defender is very much an important part of the Crystal Palace side, meaning it would likely take a considerable offer for the Eagles to let the 29-year-old leave this summer.

TIF Thoughts…

Having said this, despite Van Aanholt being the only senior left-back in the Palace squad, over the past couple of weeks, 20-year-old Tyrick Mitchell has featured for the Eagles in the position, meaning that Palace do potentially have another option for the spot.

Although, these two appearances for Mitchell were extremely short, playing just seven minutes in the club’s 3-0 loss to Leicester City, as well as six minutes in Palace’s 2-0 loss to Manchester United last week.

As such, it would seem that Hodgson does not appear to believe that Mitchell is quite ready for first-team football just yet, once again strengthening the idea that Palace may not want to part with Van Aanholt this summer.
