Spurs fans on Twitter have been discussing Atletico Madrid centre-back Stefan Savic after it was suggested that the North London club have opened negotiations with his agent over a potential transfer.
According to Todo Fichajes (via Ricky Sacks), the Lilywhites have opened negotiations with the 29-year-old’s agent with a view to him joining the club this summer. It was previously reported by the same source that Spurs were keen on signing the Montenegrin ahead of next season, although the most recent report suggests that AS Monaco are also keen on the centre-back.
Savic has had a spell in the Premier League previously with Manchester City but left to join Fiorentina in 2012, where he spent three years before joining Diego Simeone’s side in 2015 (per Transfermarkt). In nearly five years with Los Colchoneros, the defender has made 151 appearances; contributing two goals and three assists (per Transfermarkt).
Considering Jan Vertonghen looks likely to leave Spurs this summer when his contract expires, it is no surprise to see the North London club being linked with centre-backs ahead of the transfer window, and perhaps the former Manchester City man could be the ideal replacement for the Belgian in Jose Mourinho’s side.
Would Savic be a good replacement for Vertonghen?
Yes
No
Reaction from Spurs fans to the latest report on Savic can be seen in the tweets below. One believes the signing of Savic could be a ‘masterstroke’ from the Tottenham boss, with Mourinho boasting an impressive track record in the transfer market.

Plenty of Spurs fans commented on the 29-year-old’s previous spell with Manchester City, suggesting that if he hasn’t improved from those days, he wouldn’t be a worthwhile signing.
Is this the same slavic that was absolutely useless at man city?

Wasn’t he at City and couldn’t really hack it?

It seems as if a lot of Spurs fans are not keen to sign Savic this summer.

Overall, it seems as if the majority of Spurs fans will be hoping that the club doesn’t sign Savic ahead of next season. However, considering the 29-year-old has spent five years under the tutelage of Simeone, a man renowned for his ability to earn his side clean sheets, perhaps Lilywhites fans should reconsider, as their side have kept just four clean sheets in the Premier League so far this season.
