As stated in Chronicle Live’s report, the duo had trained with the club’s first team this season, however, neither were give squad numbers at the beginning of the campaign.
Sterry is league 1 quality and Colback Championship at a push its about time we start clearing the dead wood.

Colback made 102 appearances during his time at St. James’ Park in which he was able to bag five goals and ten assists (per Transfermarkt).
Sterry, however, made just eight first-team appearances for the Toon in which he neither scored nor assisted (per Transfermarkt).
So, it seemed that the majority of fans were glad to see the back of the duo.
Are you pleased that the club has released the two players?Yes, not good enoughNo, should have stayed |
Colback picked money over his career, he was happy to sit in the reserves collecting 50-60k a week. He will be lucky to get a league one club now.

Others looked to defend the players, though.
There’s a lot of hatred towards Colback which I just don’t understand. People forget he had 2-3 good years at the club and #nufc fans were calling for him to get England recognition. He’s got on with his training & honoured his Contract which the club decided to give him.

Shame about Sterry – admittedly only saw him play in a couple of pre-season friendlies, but thought he looked promising. Suppose he’s 24 now, and hasn’t really kicked on.

However, as can be seen in most of the responses from the St. James’ Park faithful, they were pleased to see that the two players had been released by the club.
