His fellow ex-United player David May questioned the former South African international about his move to Old Trafford during a recent edition of the official Manchester United podcast, asking Fortune how former United manager Sir Alex Ferguson initially approached him about joining the club.
May asked: “What was the conversation he had with you to actually bring you to the club?” To which Fortune replied: “I just remember he came to speak about the club, I just remember the boss saying to me, ‘We want to sign you’, and I was like – ‘that’s the best noise you could hear’. That was it – yes, boom, signed.
“I didn’t care what the club [offered] me, I just wanted to play and that’s what United were like back then – when United call, you don’t care. You just sign, boom.”

TIF Thoughts…
Fortune joined United in the 1999/00 season, which was the season after they had won the UEFA Champions League, Premier League, and FA Cup in the 1998/99 campaign.
Considering the level of success that United had enjoyed the season prior to approaching him, it may not come as a big surprise that Fortune didn’t take much convincing to make the move to Old Trafford in January 2000.
