According to recent reports by French website Soccer Link, Manchester City, along with Bayern Munich and Arsenal, are interested in the signing of RB Leipzig centre-back, Dayot Upamecano.

The report claims that a deal had previously been agreed between Upamecano and Bayern Munich, however, the financial effects of the viral outbreak, which saw football suspended for a lengthy spell, has forced the German giants to reconsider their move for the defender.

As such, this has opened the door for Pep Guardiola and Manchester City, with the Spaniard previously suggesting that he is extremely keen to strengthen in the centre of defence this summer.

The report goes on to suggest that Arsenal are also interested in the 21-year-old, however, the defender ‘absolutely wants to play the Champions League next year’, which could both be an issue for the North London club, who currently sit in ninth place in the Premier League table, as well as City, who are waiting to hear the verdict of their appeal against a two-year ban from European football.

TIF Thoughts…

Since joining RB Leipzig from Red Bull Salzburg for a fee of £9million back in 2017, Upamecano has gone on to make 108 appearances for Die Roten Bullen, scoring three goals and providing one assist.

So far this season, the 21-year-old has made 25 appearances in the Bundesliga, averaging 2.0 tackles, 1.5 interceptions, 3.2 clearances and 0.7 blocks per game, as well as an impressive WhoScored match rating of 7.11, ranking him Leipzig’s joint seventh-best player.

The defender has also performed admirably for the club in the Champions League, averaging a 7.30 match rating over his six appearances in the competition.

As such, it would seem that, should City be successful in their attempts to sign the £40.5million-rated Upamecano, they would be gaining an assured but young centre-back, who is already capable of performing impressively at the highest level of football that Europe has to offer.
