It seems as if Sergio Aguero will require an operation on the knee injury that saw him come off injured during Monday night’s 5-0 win over Burnley.

According to TNT Sports journalist Veronica Brunati, the Argentinian striker will undergo an MRI scan, before having the operation in Barcelona on Thursday or Friday of this week. Athletic journalist Sam Lee then shared this news on his Twitter page. The former Atletico Madrid man was substituted in the first half of Monday’s 5-0 win (per BBC), with Pep Guardiola later saying that the injury “doesn’t look good” (per Sky Sports).

Man City fan? We bet you can't get 100% on this Yaya Toure quiz. We'll start you off with an easy one... Who did Yaya Toure sign for City from back in 2010?

The 32-year-old is the Citizens’ top scorer in the Premier League this season, having contributed 16 goals in 24 appearances (per WhoScored) in the top flight, but it seems as if the current champions could be without their star striker for the remaining fixtures. Following Monday’s win, Guardiola’s side are now 20 points behind runaway leaders Liverpool and with just eight games remaining for both sides, you imagine that now Aguero requires surgery, what already looked like a near-impossible task just got even harder for the Citizens.

TIF Thoughts…

Fortunately for City, they have an excellent understudy to Aguero in the shape of Gabriel Jesus. The Brazilian has 10 goals in just 14 Premier League starts (per WhoScored) so far this season, so perhaps the injury to his Argentinian teammate will allow him to become a more regular starter in the remaining fixtures. For Aguero, you wonder whether this injury might accelerate his plans to return to his home country and play for Independiente, although it is unclear how long the injury will keep him out for, and the long-term damage it could yet cause.

Do you think Aguero's injury will be a long-term one?

The 32-year-old’s contract with the Citizens is set to expire at the end of next year, so it would perhaps not be a surprise to see him leave the club he has now scored 254 goals for in the not-too-distant future.
