Football finance expert Kieran Maguire has been discussing the transfer of Louie Barry from West Bromwich Albion to Barcelona.

In the summer of 2019, the Catalan club signed the youngster from the Baggies on a three-year deal for a compensation fee of £235,000 after he had turned down a contract offer at The Hawthorns (per BBC).

Then, in January this year, Barcelona sold Barry to Aston Villa for a fee in the region of €1m (£904k).

On the latest episode of The Price of Football Podcast, Maguire discussed the transfer of the player from West Brom to Barcelona and how the La Liga giants had not paid the compensation fee.

He said: “I think West Bromwich Albion will be pursuing Barcelona via FIFA, or via UEFA, for the non-payment for Louie Barry.

“They [West Brom] sold him for £235,000. I went on to the Barcelona website and one of the great things about these big clubs they do publish, of course, in multiple languages. They [Barcelona] sold Louie Barry for €1.05m.

“So, clearly they’ve done very well in the six months that the young man’s been at the club. They would have to give West Brom a proportion of that in what’s known as a development fee.

“Because if you sign a player who is young and you sell him on, then the club who had him as a youth player is entitled to a share of that transfer fee.

“So, West Brom should be getting not just the £235,000 but also a proportion of the just over €1m that Barcelona have from the sale of Barry to Villa.”

TIF Thoughts…

So, it would seem that while Barcelona have not yet paid anything for the signing of Barry, West Brom may be entitled to more money than thought at first.

Are you bothered if the club receives any money from Barcelona for Louie Barry's departure?

No, not that important

No, not that important

Yes, they owe us money

Yes, they owe us money

While Maguire suggested that the club may be pursuing those funds via the authorities to retrieve the money which they are owed, a report from the Express and Star earlier this year stated that the EFL would also be helping.
