Liverpool have reportedly held positive talks with Reds midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum over a potential new contract at the club.

This comes after it was recently reported by The Guardian that the Merseyside club are “hopeful of agreeing a contract extension of at least three years” with the Dutchman after these initial talks.

The report added that wages for the midfield man are “not expected to be a stumbling block” with the negotiations.

The report also added that Wijnaldum “wanted assurances he would continue to be regarded as a key player before entering into discussions to extend his career at Anfield.”

The 29-year-old first signed to the Merseyside club back in the 2016 summer transfer window from fellow Premier League club Newcastle United for a fee of £24.75 million (per Transfermarkt).

Since then, the midfielder has gone on to make a total of 177 appearances for the Reds in which he has managed to score 18 goals and provide 16 assists along the way (per Transfermarkt).

Two of his more important goals for the club came against Barcelona last season and this saw Liverpool come from behind to beat the Spanish club to a spot in the Champions League final, which they eventually won.

TIF Thoughts…

The fact that Liverpool are trying to tie down Wijnaldum to pledge his future to the club just goes to show how much they value him and want to continue having him play there.

The hefty number of appearances Wijnaldum has made for the club this season also proves just how important he is to Klopp as well.
