Frank Lampard’s Chelsea are reportedly aiming to catch up to Liverpool by signing Bayer Leverkusen forward Kai Havertz this summer.

This comes after it was claimed in a report from The Guardian that the London club have “contacted Bayer Leverkusen about signing Kai Havertz this summer and hope to field the Germany winger alongside Timo Werner, who has agreed to join from RB Leipzig”.

It’s stated that Chelsea have held early talks with Leverkusen and would hope to negotiate a fee in the region of £70m for Havertz.

Liverpool were linked with a move for Werner until it was revealed that Chelsea looked to have snatched him away from the Reds.

The same could be said for Havertz, who has also been linked with a move to Anfield recently.

Should Liverpool sign Havertz this summer?

Now that it has been reported that Chelsea could be aiming to sign Havertz, this is claimed to be because they “know there is ground to make up on Liverpool and Manchester City after going two windows without signings and have seen an opportunity to make decisive early moves while rivals are deciding how much to spend.”

Havertz has been in scintillating form for Leverkusen so far this season. In 26 Bundesliga appearances, the 20-year-old has managed to score 11 goals and provide five assists, resulting in the German being awarded a season rating of 7.34/10, making him the highest-rated player for Leverkusen in the Bundesliga this year (per WhoScored).

This impressive record so far this season could be the main reason why Liverpool and Chelsea are both interested in securing Havertz’s signature this summer.

TIF Thoughts…

The fact that both Premier League clubs are reportedly interested in signing Havertz this summer just goes to show how impressive he has been for Leverkusen this season.

Also, the fact that Chelsea want to use Havertz to help them catch up to Liverpool goes to show just how far Jurgen Klopp’s side are ahead of the London club.
