Liverpool journalist James Pearce has revealed his thoughts on Reds midfielder Curtis Jones.

This comes after Pearce recently made an appearance on The Athletic’s Liverpool-themed podcast the Red Agenda.

2018/19 season quiz: How many points did Jurgen Klopp's side accumulate in the Premier League?

After being asked which of Liverpool’s young fringe players could he see shining the most for the Merseyside club in the near future, Pearce picked Jones as his choice.

“I think probably Curtis Jones is probably leading that charge at the moment,” he said.

“For me, when I look at those young players and the development in them over the course of this season, he’s the one I think who’s made the biggest strides.

“I think he’s had an amazing year. When you factor in the winner against Everton and the honour of becoming Liverpool’s youngest-ever captain when he skippered them to victory in that cup replay again Shrewsbury Town.

“I think physically, he is now much more able to make an impact at the top level and you can see how much he’s benefited from training day-in, day-out with top-class players.”

Jones has made 27 total appearances for Liverpool so far this season across multiple competitions for the youth team as well as making some appearances for Jurgen Klopp’s senior side (per Transfermarkt).

For the senior side, the midfielder has made two Premier League appearances, two in the Carabao Cup and four in the FA Cup (per Transfermarkt).

One of those FA Cup appearances saw Jones score a fantastic winning goal against Everton in the third round of the competition back in January.

TIF Thoughts…

It’s great to hear that Pearce has so much praise for Jones when he’s only been given a handful of chances to shine in Liverpool’s first team.

With Liverpool set to resume their current Premier League season this weekend, given that they are so far ahead at the top of the league table, maybe Jones could find himself being given some more opportunities to shine in the team.
