In recent comments made on The Athletic’s website, Leeds United correspondent Phil Hay discussed the future of the club’s loanee striker, Jean-Kévin Augustin.

After joining Leeds on a loan deal from RB Leipzig in January of this year, the French forward went on to make a disappointing three Championship appearances for the Whites, scoring no goals and averaging a WhoScored match rating of just 5.96.

Nice easy one to start. Who is this current Leeds man?

However, this lack of appearances has predominantly been down to concerns of fitness, rather than Marcelo Bielsa not favouring the Frenchman.

Having said this, while it has been reported that Leeds are obliged to purchase Augustin should they achieve promotion to the Premier League this season, it remains to be seen whether or not Bielsa would actually like to keep the player on beyond his loan contract at the club.

And, when asked about the future of the 23-year-old on a discussion on The Athletic website, Phil Hay had this to say on the matter:

“His loan is up today [30 June] and I don’t expect Leeds to extend it. There’s no point if he’s not going to be fit for these last seven games. As for the permanent deal, that remains to be seen. It’s a massive commitment financially and if Leeds aren’t convinced, they’ll try to find a way out of the obligation.”

TIF Thoughts…

Considering Augustin has hardly featured at all for Bielsa’s table-topping side this season, one would assume that the club are yet to be convinced of the striker’s potential – meaning that, should they go on to achieve promotion to the Premier League, they may have to – as Hay states – ‘find a way out of the obligation’ which would see him move to the club on a permanent basis.

If Leeds go up would you want Augustin?

No, barely seen anything of him

Yes, would be good to see what he can do
