Sky Sports recently published an article sharing the alleged news that 54-year-old Nigel Clough “has held preliminary talks with Birmingham City about replacing Pep Clotet” as the club’s manager after it was announced last week that Clotet would be leaving St. Andrew’s at the end of the 2019/20 campaign.

This report comes after it was announced that Clough stepped down from his role as Burton Albion manager back in May, with the club sitting in 12th place in League One. Burton Albion released a statement on their official club website announcing this news and this statement quoted Clough as saying that “by stepping away it helps the club with the financial pressures in these unprecedented times”.

We will look at Marcelo Bielsa to kick off this quiz on the Championship's managers, which of these national teams has the Leeds United boss managed?

The now-former Burton Albion coach was also quoted as saying that he and his backroom staff “are now looking forward to (their) next challenge in football wherever and whenever that is”, in this statement from the Brewers’ official website, indicating that he may be keeping an eye out for his next job opportunity.

Would Nigel Clough be a good fit for Birmingham City?

TIF Thoughts…

Clough does have prior experience of managing in England’s second-tier. The 54-year-old has managed a total of 305 games in the Championship during his career, earning 1.18 points-per-game from those fixtures according to Transfermarkt.

Clough managed a team for the full 46 games of a Championship season on six separate occasions, doing so four times with Derby County and another two times with Burton Albion. While he only suffered relegation once, Clough didn’t finish in a playoff place in any of those seasons and with that in mind, he may not be a particularly exciting name for Blues fans to see being linked with the club, with Birmingham City currently sitting nine points away from the playoffs.
