A lot of Newcastle United fans have replied to a tweet from The Chronicle that includes a link to their live blog. (12:29)
Included in this live blog there is news from The Times about Giles Watling’s call for a select committee to review evidence of Saudi Arabian piracy of British sport.
However, the report also states that the chairman of the UK Parliamentary Football Club, Karl McCartney, will also ask the government to block the proposed takeover of Newcastle by Amanda Staveley’s Saudi-backed consortium.
It is this part of the piece that has got these Toon fans talking.
Are you surprised by these objections?
No
Yes
Chairman of the UK Parliamentary Football Club is also reportedly set to urge that the sale of #NUFC be blocked.https://t.co/SpiqoAzsp4

Why haven’t any of them urged for the blocking of the arms deal they have with the Saudis. This is hypocritical nonsense.

I’m sorry but the boutq or thing he’s going on about still being a threat now hasn’t streamed anything since last year lol.

The premier league letting this drag out is making the whole process seem more farcical. Something needs to happen one way or the other
— Luke W (@LukeWhitrow) May 14, 2020
Legally he can’t do this. Please ignore this click bait. Government already stated it will not intervene and will allow @premierleague to complete the checks. I do admit this needs a yes or no soon as it’s becoming farcical the media reports!

Surely it’s about time that journalists start digging as to who is pushing this agenda. Someone is desperate for this not to happen its bordering on the obsessive

Disgusting this like

Do you really think tweeting this rubbish is helping any Newcastle fans!?!? #NUFC

What do we think?
This piece from Martyn Ziegler suggests that there is now government opposition to the proposed takeover of Newcastle United.
However, the government have said that they would not intervene with this takeover and that they would leave it to the Premier League.
It will be interesting to see if they stick to their word or if they do launch an investigation.
