Some Sheffield Wednesday supporters have flocked to a tweet that was recently posted by Wednesday-focused journalist Alex Miller who has shared a recent article from The Sheffield Star which provides an update on “talks over player wage deferrals”.
Miller’s recent article for The Sheffield Star explains that “question marks remain over the vast payment of player wages” amid the postponement of professional football in England which is currently set to continue “until no earlier than Thursday 30 April”, as confirmed by a statement which was shared by The FA’s official website on Thursday 19 March.
Some Owls fans have been critical of their club’s players on social media in response to this tweet. Miller’s recent article also confirms that Wednesday are “one of several clubs to have placed non-football staff on furlough” for this period in which the professional game has been postponed in England. This report regarding the talks around the deferral of player wages at the club has prompted some Wednesday fans to call their players ‘selfish’.

I’ve often suspected the majority of our players are only motivated by getting paid. I’m yet to see anything to disprove that theory.

Most of them have been stealing a living for years, why stop now?

the way they have been this year they should reimburse every fan that’s gone this season and take a 20% cut

Our players are selfish, only need to look at recent performances to show they’re playing for money not the clubs and fans! They should be following Leeds example (which pains me to say), they could even donate to the less fortunate out there! Clear the lot out ?????

So selfish.

Can players be furloughed?

What do we think?
According to a report by The Telegraph from 24 March, Birmingham City became the first Championship club to ask their players to take wage deferrals. Blues defender Harlee Dean also confirmed to talkSPORT that he would be taking “a pay cut to ensure no jobs are lost at the club”.
Considering that there are no football matches being played at present, some clubs may experience some financial difficulties during this time in which they will earn no matchday revenue. With that in mind, it may be understandable why some clubs, such as Wednesday, may have felt the need to “place non-playing staff on furlough”.
However, it may also be understandable why some Wednesday fans have been looking to their club’s players to take a temporary wage cut during this time to help out the club, considering that other Championship sides have already set an example of doing this.
