Supporters of Everton have taken to social media to air their thoughts on the club’s former defender, Ashley Williams.
On Monday evening, @TheKendallEnd labelled the Welshman as a ‘leader and solid player’ before he moved to Merseyside, however, turned into one of the ‘worst centre backs that Everton have ever had’, which had many fans discussing him.
Was a leader and solid player for Swansea, came to Everton and became one of the many worst centre backs that Everton have ever had. What happened? pic.twitter.com/SwS7z8XBEx

Like lots of players we’vw signed over the past 6 years, he was a good player in an average team at Swansea. The step up into a much bigger club with a much bigger expectation exposed him. His legs had absolutely gone too.

I don’t think the move was right for him mentally, he had very little expected of him at Swansea, no disrespect to them. Massive jump up to playing in front of our lot every other week, we just expect more and he couldn’t deliver. Never looked “set” for the challenge.

Was fairly good in his first season. Brought what was needed.
His second season was just so woeful, such a drop off, that it totally wiped out anything gone before.— Andreas Wätt (@Wattawildworld) April 14, 2020
Were Everton supporters being overly harsh on Ashley Williams on Twitter? No, he was woefulYes, wasn't that bad |
The now 35-year-old Bristol City defender arrived at Goodison Park in the summer of 2016 from Swansea City for a fee believed to be in the region of £12 million (per BBC).
While with Everton, Williams made 73 appearances, during which he scored three goals and assisted three (per Transfermarkt), however, he failed to impress the Toffees faithful.
Big fish little pond at Swansea came to Everton and was out of his depth

Don’t think he ever was all that in the first place. Made a few howlers for Swansea over the years

Sigs was the same, awesome at Swansea but had the jitters when he joined us

Small fish in a big pond at Us !!! Swansea the opposite!! Big fish in a small pond at Swansea! That’s the level he was unfortunately out of his depth with us but on a personal level played for a big club and topped his pension right up !!

An embarrassment and given the captaincy too – his performance in the Europa game where he caused the ruckus was shameful. Attitude all wrong.

What do we think?
As can be seen in these responses from Everton fans, they certainly pull no punches when it comes to their thoughts on the Welsh defender.
With the 35-year-old’s average rating having dropped from 7.19/10 in his last Premier League season with Swansea to 6.7/10 in his last Premier League season with Everton (per WhoScored), that may explain supporters’ feelings.
