Some Aston Villa fans have taken to social media to share their appreciation for Mbwana Samatta’s ‘brilliant’ performance in Villa’s 2-1 loss to Manchester City in the 2019/20 League Cup final.

Villa ultimately came up short in the 2019/20 League Cup final. Two Manchester City goals within the first 30 minutes of play were enough to ensure that the League Cup stayed on the blue side of Manchester for the third year in a row.

City were, however, denied a clean sheet as a header courtesy of Samatta grabbed one goal back for the Villans before half time. Samatta’s 41st-minute header was ultimately the final goal scored in Sunday’s League Cup final, with City maintaining their 2-1 lead until the final whistle blew.

Villa’s goalscorer took to social media following the disappointing cup final loss to thank Villa fans “for the support”, despite losing the game by a goal. Some Villa supporters subsequently replied to the centre forward’s message to share their appreciation for his efforts in Sunday’s cup final. Read the appreciative messages from some Villa fans, in response to the 27-year-old’s post in the tweets below.

What do we think?

In addition to scoring Villa’s only goal of the game, Samatta took two of Villa’s five shots at goal and won two aerials in last Sunday’s game, according to WhoScored.com. Samatta’s performance earned him an overall rating of 7.1 in the League Cup final according to WhoScored, which was bested by only one other Aston Villa player last Sunday, Anwar El Ghazi.

The Tanzanian forward has earned an average overall rating of 6.94, on WhoScored, in his three Premier League games for Aston Villa since signing for the club this past January. That makes him Villa’s fifth-highest average overall rating of any Villa player in the Premier League this season.

It may be fair to say that Samatta has quickly shown his ability to make an impact for Villa in his short time at the club by delivering impressive performances and proving his goalscoring ability on stages such as the League Cup final.
