Liverpool fans have flocked to Twitter to slam defender Joe Gomez for his performance in the Reds’ 3-2 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.
This comes after the Englishman played the full 120 minutes of the match at Anfield that saw Jurgen Klopp’s side crash out of the competition thanks to goals from Marcos Llorente and Alvaro Morata (per BBC Sport).
After the match had ended, many Liverpool fans took the time to share their thoughts and unfavourable opinions on Gomez’s performance in the match.
Was Joe Gomez Liverpool's worst player against Atletico?
Yes
No
Here’s a sample of Liverpool fans slating Gomez:
Poor defending from Gomez and Henderson on Athletico’s second goal. Gave him too much time and space. Allowed him to turn onto his stronger foot and pull the shot off. Not good enough.

#lfc been great tonight just silly mistake for first goal but why didn’t anyone make a challenge for the 2nd goal very poor. I don’t think gomez is as good as people make out but have to look at bigger picture we win nearly every game so can’t be too critical

Gomez and Adrian have been shocking in extra time. #LFC

Gomez’ positioning during that extra time was terrible

Gomez’s performance in the match earned him a match rating of 5.92, the second-lowest of any starting Liverpool player (per WhoScored). After the match had ended, many Liverpool fans took to Twitter to share their criticisms for Gomez after his display in the 3-2 defeat.
Van dijk and Gomez cost us this game as much as Adrian. Worst piece of defending all season. Very poor

Adrian poor but match was there for the taking. Salah, Gomez poor. Atletico clinical. No creativity for Liverpool or poacher despite efforts on goal.

Gomez at fault for that goal

What do we think?
Unfortunately for Gomez and Liverpool, this was a poor day at the office for the Englishman that ultimately saw the Reds fail to progress further in the competition. The best thing for the team to do now is focus on wrapping up the Premier League title.
